We have a small number of works from Holland's early years. In general these early works are characterised by intense attention to detail - even the cartoons for Left Review and Lilliput.
We have limited access to the lithographs he produced during the mythic years of Jim Fitton's lithography classes at the Central School, although my researches on their archives indicate that they retain copies of various works. This is the only one I have been able to get my hands on to photograph to date, and shows incredible detail.
The rather grim conditions depicted are indicative of Holland's leanings towards Social Realism, and reflect the conditions in a number of port areas. The atmosphere is similar to that in one of Holland's better known and critically aclaimed cartoons for Left Review - The Sailor's Return.
