During the Second World War, Holland worked for the Ministry of Information but his family lived outside London in rural Hampshire. Holland joined the local Home Guard, and being an educated type, was the Sergeant. I have always assumed that, vagaries of living arrangements aside, Sergeant Wilson in Dad's Army was very much in the mould of Holland, who was not at all a military type.
Naturally the sketch book was never very far away, and there are images below of his brothers in arms. He told me that some of his colleagues were very good shots, often because they supplemented their income with a bit of poaching, while others would turn up with garden and farming implements rather than guns, because that was all they had to hand.
Anyway, here are some sketches.
